No-Sky July & Fogust: My Go-To Layers for California’s Moody Summers

No-Sky July & Fogust: My Go-To Layers for California’s Moody Summers

California summers keep me on my toes. Just when I think I can leave the house in nothing but a sundress, the marine layer rolls in thick and gray. May Gray, June Gloom, No-Sky July, and Fogust—we really do get it all here. Misty mornings, sun-drenched afternoons, and cool summer nights that make you reach for something extra.

For me, it’s second nature to grab a lightweight layer before heading out the door. Whether I’m walking our dogs Jax and Cash early in the morning, popping into the boutique, or enjoying a glass of wine on the porch in the evening, I always want something soft and easy within reach.

Lately, I’ve been reaching for:

Our classic cotton crewneck in Off-White or Navy (it’s one of those forever pieces I can toss in my tote and know it will work).

The Wren Open-Knit Cardigan, which I love for its effortless drape—it feels breathable but still gives that little bit of warmth.

And of course, our Cotton Summer Blanket. I keep a few at home and one in the car—it’s perfect for a beach picnic, draped over my lap during cool evenings outside, or even as an extra layer to give to friends when we host them for dinner al fresco.

These pieces pair beautifully with my favorite summer dresses. I love a cardigan casually tossed over the shoulders of our Portofino Gingham Dress or knotted at the waist over the Riviera Dress.

For strapless styles like the Santorini Strapless Midi, Cassis Strapless, or the Florence Strapless Midi (there’s just one left in size small, now on sale), a lightweight sweater feels chic and practical all at once.

It’s why we keep a Sweaters + Cardigans collection on our website year-round. Because in California, you really do need a layer—even in the heart of summer.

So here’s your little reminder: grab a layer on your way out. Tuck one in your tote. Keep a blanket in the car. These simple pieces turn those moody, ever-changing summer days into opportunities for slow, cozy moments.

XOXO,

Jenn 🤍
